Most people who come to Carnac see it from behind a fence, looking at fields of stone they’re not allowed to walk into. This visit is different. Your guide takes you inside one of the enclosures that’s normally off-limits, so you’re standing among menhirs raised roughly six thousand years ago, with actual room to take it in.
Your guide is affiliated with the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, the French body that oversees the site, so getting inside the closed section isn’t some workaround. It’s simply how the visit works. Your guide speaks English and knows the site well, from what archaeologists still argue about to the older stories locals still tell.
If you’d like to go further, you can add Locmariaquer, about 25 minutes down the coast. There you’ll find the Great Broken Menhir, once a single 21-metre block of granite, and the Table des Marchands dolmen, with carvings that are hard to believe are this old.
Plan on about an hour and a half at Carnac by itself, or closer to half a day if you add Locmariaquer once you count the drive between sites. Wear closed shoes. The ground is natural moor, not manicured pathway.
