Saint-Malo is the city many readers already know without knowing it: the walled town at the heart of All the Light We Cannot See, where a blind girl’s radio broadcasts crackled out over the rooftops as the war closed in. The siege nearly destroyed it. The ramparts still stand. The backstreets still hide its secrets. This is the place behind the pages.

Saint-Malo is unlike anywhere else in Brittany: a walled city built on privateer fortunes, flattened in the final days of the Second World War, and rebuilt stone by stone to look exactly as it always had. Behind the ramparts lies a maze of narrow streets that most visitors never find, each one carrying its own piece of the story.

Your guide knows this city intimately: the corsairs who made Saint-Malo one of the wealthiest ports in France, the wartime battle that nearly destroyed it, and the backstreets where the real history lives, away from the crowds on the main ramparts. Guiding is in English and the pace is entirely yours.

The two-hour walk covers the essentials: the ramparts, the hidden corners of the Intra-muros, and the stories behind them. For a fuller day, extend the visit with lunch at a partner restaurant and an afternoon walk to the Cité d’Alet, where Roman ruins, the site of the Battle of Saint-Malo, and the Solidor Tower await.
